Race Report & Results

Qualifying

The GT4 Challenge qualifying session commenced at 9.00am in bright and still conditions. Oulton Park winners Kieran & Liam Griffin suffered immediate drama with a puncture on the rear of the car. This forced the #6 car to stop out on track and was unable to restart the session. This would mean that the brothers would start at the rear of the field. With 11 minutes of the 30 minute session remaining, Tim Eakin & Richard Taffinder jumped to the top of the timesheets. They held on to the pole position, one again showing their qualifying class.

Calum Lockie & Kevin Norville put in a strong performance to take 3rd place, with Stratton pairing David Tinn & John Dickson just behind by 0.141s. Tom Black & Chris Kemp suffered an engine issue in Friday testing, necessitating a change of car. The spare car, entered as #91 took them to 5th place, 7 tenths off Tinn & Dickson.

Race one

The first race got underway at 1.57pm in warm but cloudy conditions. Off the start, Liam Griffin in the #6 clearly had the bit between his teeth having started from the back. He overtook 5 cars in 4 corners before passing Eakin in the #56 at Graceland's. Tom Black in the #91 Vantage Racing car moved up to 3rd on the opening lap. On lap 2 Paul Cripps in the MB Racing car passed Kevin Norville to take 4th, with David Tinn rounding out the field in 6th. Cripps set off after Black, closing the gap to 4 seconds.

On lap 9 the issue of track limits was brought up by Race Control with cars 6 & 56 being shown the black & white flag. By lap 11, Cripps was beginning to close the gap to Black. However by lap 13, Tom responded to push the gap back out to 6 seconds.

On lap 13 Kevin in the #27 pitted to hand over the car to Calum Lockie. Calum immediately got the hammer down to chase after the leading #6 JWB Motorsport car. During his charge, Calum set fastest lap on lap 19 with a 1:31.816. On lap 23, car #91 served a drive through penalty triggered by a pit stop that didn't meet the minimum time. On lap 29, Calum caught Kieran Griffin and made the move stick to take the lead.

There were further drive through penalties to come for cars 6 & 56 for speeding in the pit lane during their mandatory stops. Chris Kemp in the #91 Vantage car caught up to the #56 car of Taffinder & Eakin following their penalty, making the move at the Brook chicane to take 3rd place. Having conceded the place, Richard held on to Chris but suffered a power steering issue which resulted in retirement just prior to the finish.

At the flag it was Kevin Norville & Calum Lockie who took a convincing win over Kieran & Liam Griffin in the #6 with Tom Black & Chris Kemp rounding out the podium. Paul Cripps took 4th for MB Racing despite some contact with the wall, followed by David Tinn & John Dickson in 5th, with Richard Taffinder & Tim Eakin 6th.

Race two

The second race got underway at 11.56am in bright and clear conditions. The grid order was set by the result of Race 1, so it was Kevin Norville who headed the field off the start as they approached the Turn 1 banking. Liam Griffin in the #6 JWB Motorsport car immediately made the jump to take the lead and Chris Kemp moved inside Kevin at Kirby to take 2nd place. By lap 3, the two silver and blue cars of Mike Brown and Richard Taffinder were putting Kevin under real pressure, they moved past at the chicane. Mike, in the #7 MB Racing car had gone from last on the grid to 3rd place in only 3 laps, a great early charge.

#56 & #27 had a great scrap for several laps, with Kevin matching Richard, though eventually, the Hills Racing car began to pull away. By lap 12, Liam in the #6 held a lead of 31 seconds, however the team lost time in the pit stop, which played in to Calum Lockie's hands, who was now driving the #27 with some vigour. David Tinn in the #47 was the final car to pit during the 30 minute window, thankfully all the stops were above their minimum time, so there would be no need for any penalties.

By lap 22, Tom Black held the lead by 34 seconds over Kieran Griffin with Calum Lockie 3rd. Mike Brown was 4th, ahead of Tim Eakin, with John Dickson now 6th. Later on this lap, Calum passed Kieran to take second place and then started his pursuit of Tom. Tom had good, consistent pace at the start of his stint, however, tyre issues slowed him as the race went on, allowing Calum to catch and pass him on 31. While the fight for the lead was raging, the 4th place battle was no less intense with Mike Brown and Tim Eakin coming very close on a number of occasions, with Tm eventually prevailing.

At the flag, Calum Lockie & Kevin Norville took their second win of the weekend, ahead of Tom Black, with Kieran Griffin 3rd. Tim Eakin brought the car home in 4th, just ahead of Mike brown, with John Dickson taking 6th.

The next round of the GT4 Challenge takes place at Silverstone on May 31 Anyone interested in hospitality passes to attend as a spectator/guest or competing in the race on an ‘arrive and drive’ basis with Stratton Motorsport should go to www.astonmartin.com/gt4challenge for further information.
