Cybersecurity and the use of AI

We consider cyber security and the use of AI in both our own operations as well as our vehicles. Our Chief Financial Officer oversees our Cyber Security Strategy, our IT leadership and dedicated Cyber Security team. Our Cyber Security Policy is supported by guidance and training offered to all employees. As part of our business continuity planning, our cyber security is tested on a regular basis.

Cybersecurity management

In our vehicles, we have an active Cyber Security Management System (‘CSMS’) as mandated by the UN ECE Regulation 155. The CSMS process ensures that cyber security principles are implemented in the absolute core  of the business and engrained in our process. These include:

  • Organisational Cyber Security Management

  • Project Dependent Cyber Security

  • Cyber Security Development

  • Cyber Security in Production

  • Cyber Security in Operations, Maintenance, Decommissioning and End-Of-Life Support

  • Supplier Management

  • Continual Cyber Security Activities and Incident Response
  •

    Cybersecurity of the vehicle

Whilst the CSMS focuses on cyber security at an organisational level, we also have cyber security vehicle type approval which focuses on the cyber security of the vehicle itself. This includes examples such as how secure the vehicle architecture is, the relevant implementation of security controls within the vehicle and also an overall risk assessment of the vehicle from a cyber security point of view. As part of this process, we conduct regular penetration testing and security assessments on our vehicles on both the hardware and software we implement into our vehicles to emulate what a malicious attacker would try and do.

    Autonomous driving

We are exploring the benefits that autonomous driving capabilities can offer in terms of convenience and safety, while always considering that active driver experience is a key principle that guides our product design.

Aston Martin is working with technical partners and developing toolchains and processes to allow for the future safe deployment of autonomous features and systems up to ‘SAE Level 3’ in future vehicles enabled by AI. SAE International is a global standards development and professional association with over 12,800 engineers and technical experts in mobility engineering. The SAE Level 3 defines a capability known as ‘conditional automation’, where the vehicle can take over in certain conditions such as traffic jams.
