There’s a moment, somewhere around the third lap of an intense hypercar development test, when Fernando Alonso stops driving and starts listening. Not to his engineers. To the car.

It matters more than you’d think, because Aston Martin Valhalla is not just another mid-engine sports car. It is the first series-production mid-engine hypercar Aston Martin has ever built. A marque defined by front-engine grand tourers and sports cars for more than a century has now channeled its formidable design and engineering expertise into the creation of a midship twin-turbo V8 hybrid. The stakes are high.

Which raises a question that no “spec sheet” can answer: how do you ensure a car this technologically complex and performance focused still feels like an Aston Martin? You place one of the most perceptive drivers alive behind the wheel and ask him to be ruthless in his appraisal.

Valhalla’s Principal Development Driver Fernando Alonso is one of the most experienced racing drivers in the world. And his teammates across Formula 1®, Le Mans, and the Dakar Rally would all say the same. He is able to get into an unfamiliar car and within one lap understand not just what it’s trying to do, but what it must do. A legacy of competing in more than 400 Grand Prix races would sharpen anyone’s instincts, of course. The rarer gift is separating the driver inputs from the car responses, then articulating any gaps in a language that engineers can act upon.

Nobody could be better placed than Fernando Alonso to shape Valhalla’s dynamic character.

The difference between fast and engaging

If you’ve owned or driven a selection of supercars or hypercars, you’ll know the ones you remember aren’t necessarily the fastest. They’re the ones that made you feel connected to the car, actively involved in the drive rather than a passenger to their technology. Valhalla had to be devastatingly capable and feel deeply, intuitively yours—the moment you press the throttle. That’s the brief. That’s the pressure.

Valhalla’s active aerodynamics are extraordinary, and it was clear from early testing that a system designed initially for Race mode had wider application. So, the active aero system is now deployed in Sport and Sport+ mode, bringing the sensational Valhalla experience to real, unscripted driving as well as on the track.

The same philosophy drove dozens of smaller calibrations. The throttle pedal return spring was retuned because Alonso identified that fractionally firmer resistance made the car feel more alive at part-throttle. Not just faster. But more responsive. The eight-speed DCT’s software was reworked until each upshift carried a percussive mechanical thump—the visceral punctuation that reminds you there are actual gears in there, not algorithms pretending. Speed with theater.

Fernando discovered that the automated DRS felt more stable if the rear wing reengaged milliseconds before the front wing when lifting off the throttle. A timing tweak too small to see. A confidence gain you feel every time you brake later than you thought possible and the car simply settles beneath you. At those moments, the technology disappears, yet the feeling remains.

Not just Principal Development Driver, but Owner too

There’s a telling detail in Fernando Alonso’s relationship with Aston Martin beyond his F1® role. His personal garage holds an Aston Martin Valkyrie and one of only 38 Valiant sports cars ever made. He knows what it means to choose a car not for what it represents on a data sheet, but for the feeling it delivers every time you take the wheel.

That dual perspective shaped every decision he influenced. Fast and neat when you need surgical precision. Engaging and expressive when you want to feel the rear axle communicating through a second-gear hairpin. The active systems don’t impose a character; they enable your own character to shine.

That is the revolution. Not only the hybrid powertrain or impressive downforce figures. The fact that a hypercar this technologically ambitious has been tuned to put driver and engineering together at the center of the experience.

“Outside of the outright power and dynamics, it delivers on all of the raw feelings and emotions you look for when behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.”
